What Is ABA Therapy for Autism?

Applied behavior analysis therapy, more commonly known as ABA therapy, is a therapeutic approach that, simply put, changes behaviors by changing the environment. We primarily use two forms of ABA therapy for autism: discrete trial training and natural environment teaching.

Natural environment teaching uses places that are familiar to the child as a safe and comfortable place to learn new skills. Also, the child has the opportunity to practice these skills in the actual environment where they usually occur, which increases confidence and eases anxiety.

Discrete trial training first breaks down a common task into individual steps. Then, each step is described and practiced with clear and direct instruction. The goal of discrete trial training is for children with autism to build new skills by deconstructing a task and focusing on each step.

We use both discrete trial training and natural environment teaching as a method for children to acquire new skills. A partial list of some of the skills taught to children at All About ABA include:

  • Daily living skills
  • Life skills
  • Community skills
  • Language and communication skills
  • Generalization skills training
  • Toilet training

Your child may require a few of these skills or all of them. Our All About ABA team is ready to adjust our programs and services to meet your child’s exact needs.
